Shaun Gaylard was born and raised in East London, South Africa. Since a young age, Shaun was fascinated with the intricacies of design and construction. With his innate talent, studying for a master’s degree in architecture at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth was a natural segue.

Shaun resides in Johannesburg and has lived and worked in London and Paris. In 2013 he launched Blank Ink Design, a design studio which provides a vehicle for the creation of his architectural drawings, inspired by local & international buildings. His design aesthetic is expressed in constrained, meticulous and precise fine line drawings. Blank Ink Design’s works have featured in leading SA magazines and several exhibitions in SA as well as the prestigious AKAA fair in Paris. A notable achievement was his design for the now minted SA25 gold coin, celebrating 25 years of constitutional democracy.  The 24 karat collectors coin is now imbued in South Africa’s history, marking a significant milestone in the country’s progress.

Locally and internationally, Blank Ink Design collections have been acquired by private collectors as well as financial institutions, the Oppenheimer’s Brenthurst Library and most recently the Spier Arts Trust.

“Architecture and objets d’art form not only the background of our lives but, if designed well, intrinsically form part of the emotional and aesthetic experience of our spaces.”
